What is a Substation/Switchyard ?

A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system, where voltage is transformed from high to low, or the reverse, or many other important functions.

What is a switchgear ?

The term switchgear, refers to the combination of electrical relays, fuses , circuit breakers, contactors etc used to isolate/ control electrical equipment.

Switchgear is used both to de-energize equipment to allow work to be done and to clear faults downstream.
